Pinnacle3

About

Description

Pinnacle3 is a Unix-based (Solaris) 3D treatment planning system owned by Philips Healthcare. The system can be used for 3D, IMRT, VMAT, electron, brachytherapy and proton planning.

History

Geometrics Corp. was founded in 1992 by Mark Gehring, Cameron Sanders, Paul Reckwerdt and the Rock Mackie to commercialize the Stereotactic Radiosurgery Planning System that had been developed at UW-Madison. The software quickly evolved to become the Pinnacle3 Treatment Planning System, and in 1996 Geometrics Corp. was acquired by ADAC Laboratories for $3.9 million. [1] Philips then acquired ADAC Laboratories, a medical device selling numerous different products, in 2000 for $426 million.[2]

Current and Future Direction

The updated Pinnacle3 version, P16, was released in 2017 with version P16.0.2 arriving a short time later. The software features an entirely new GUI with capabilities common to Windows-based programs.

Pinnacle has recently partnered with Sun Nuclear Corporation and future versions of the software beginning with P16.2 will allow a direct connection with Sun Nuclear Corporation's PlanIQ. Similarly, Pinnacle has partnered with LifeLine Software's RadCalc to offer the ability to import Pinnacle DICOM RT Plan files sent to the second check software.

As of 2017 there were no plans to move to much faster GPU-based processors or offer Multi-Criteria Optimization like their primary competitors. It is rumored that Philips intends to eventually offer a cloud-based, fully hosted planning solution.
